Ready to take the next step from general practice into specialist medicine?

As Southpaws continues to grow across our Melbourne locations, we're excited to welcome Internal Medicine to our specialist team. As we build this new department, we’re seeking applications for an Internal Medicine intern to join the team from early January 2027.

We’re looking for a motivated veterinarian who wants to build the foundations of a specialist career and shares our vision of excellence, genuine collaboration and patient-first care.

The Opportunity

As our Internal Medicine intern, you’ll work closely with our specialist team, gaining hands-on experience and assisting with a diverse referral medicine caseload.

This 12-month internship, based at our Malvern hospital, offers dedicated mentorship and the opportunity to prepare for ANZCVS Membership examinations while building a strong foundation for future specialist training.

This role is ideal for someone who:

  • Has at least 12 months of clinical experience in small animal practice
  • Has the right to work in Australia
  • Is eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria
  • Is considering ANZCVS Membership and future Internal Medicine specialist training
  • Enjoys working collaboratively and thrives in a supportive learning environment

Why Join Southpaws?

At Southpaws, we believe in care. Care for our patients, care for our clients, and care for our team. We're redefining the veterinary workplace with a focus on purpose, progression, and people.

We grow with you: Structured career development pathways and mentorship to support your evolution as a clinician
We care about connection: Monthly social initiatives, values-led leadership, and a team culture built on support and mutual respect
We collaborate across disciplines: Medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, and ECC all work closely together, giving you exposure to a broad range of complex cases
We’re building a team—not filling a role: You’ll be part of a growing medicine team, learning alongside the specialists and clinicians building a supportive, sustainable department

Our Hospital

  • Digitally integrated systems (EzyVet, Smartflow, Cubex, IDEXX)
  • Advanced diagnostics: CT, fluoroscopy, digital radiography, and full in-house labs
  • Talented, engaged nurses and a specialist-led ECC team providing 24/7 support
  • A strong reputation and growing demand from referring vets and clients

What’s on Offer

  • 12-month internship program with a pathway towards further formal specialist training
  • Dedicated mentorship from an Internal Medicine specialist
  • Competitive intern salary package, plus a generous CPD allowance and leave options
  • A genuinely supportive team culture where colleagues become friends
  • Generous discounts for family pets

If this sounds like the right next step in your career, and you’d enjoy doing it alongside people who genuinely care - we’d love to hear from you.

Apply now to start your specialist journey with us. Applications close 5pm Friday 20th November 2026
